When NOT to Outsource

The trend toward outsourcing software development in businesses has given IT management and senior executive management of any company a new avenue to get large scale software projects accomplished without swelling the ranks of their internal IT departments. While there are some compelling arguments for outsourcing, the decision about whether taking this step is cost justified needs to be put under the same cold scrutiny that any business decision must endure before it goes from concept to reality.

The question of whether outsourcing development to contractors is a good move from a cost benefit analyses can return mixed results. The use of consultants and contractors is almost always on the surface more expensive than using staff developers to do the same job. Highly trained technical consultants will change anywhere from $100 to $250 and hour which is far higher than what you pay even for well trained technical IT programmers and project developers on staff. So if you determine that the project will take 1000 hours to complete and do a simple spreadsheet comparison using only hourly rate to go by, the outsourcing decision will lose every time.

But a simple rate to rate comparison is too shallow to really be a good evaluation of whether going with an outsourcing solution is economical and a smart business move. For one thing, the company you hire to bring a solution may already have a commercial software package or a software solution they developed for another client that can be used as the base for your development. This not only saves money because much of the development has been done but it lets you start with working software so the project changes from a new development effort to one of modifying an existing product to customize it for your company.

However, there is a case for introducing some level of skepticism about the idea of outsourcing in light of the ambitions of consulting agencies themselves. If an external software firm comes in with a very convincing presentation about the value of going with a package answer to your software need or outsourcing that development, it’s a good idea to review that presentation without the “sales overhead” that was present when they were on site. To be blunt, software contractors are very good sales people and the viability of the software package or the proposed solution must be exposed to the most rigorous technical review possible before important financial resources are cut lose to turn over the solution to the contractor.

This is where a thorough and technically detailed project proposal is crucial and must be demanded of any contracting company before the decision is made about whether to turn the job over to an outside agency. Complex software solutions should be reviewed by the people within your IT department who understand the technology and the development methods being proposed. Your own IT department will look at the proposal in depth and with the interests of the company at heart and if the proposal is technically weak, they will find it.

The contracting company proposing the project should be open and patient to answer all questions and perceived flaws in the system design they present and come back with revisions to that design as often as necessary. Only when they have proven beyond any doubt to the technical gurus in IT that the solution is viable and the design will work should the contract be considered from a financial point of view.

These kinds of reviews, while rigorous also surface something else important about the contracting company. If they are transparent and willing to work with you 100% at this stage, that bodes will for an open and honest development relationship which will yield a quality product that is bug free. But if the sales people who are putting the “dog and pony show” on about their software solution are not willing to undergo in depth technical scrutiny, then it might be a time to NOT outsource, or at least not to do so with that particular agent.

How To Find A Conaultant

When you are thinking about hiring a business
consultant, one of the things that you should remember
is that you shouldn’t go with the first consultant
that you interview.

The person is going to be an employee of yours, and
you conduct several interviews when you are looking to
fill a position.

Hiring a business consultant is no different.

When you are looking for a business consultant,
instead of just going to the phone book, the first
thing that you should do is to talk to others that you
have known that have used business consultants.

Find out what their experiences were with their
consultants and if they were satisfied with what they
did for them.

Before you conduct your interview with your business
consultant, figure out what it is that you are looking
for.

What is it that you will want your business consultant
to accomplish?

Do you want the company to run more efficiently?

Do you want to cut costs?

Do you want your company to make more money?

Knowing what it is that you want to accomplish will
help the business consultants that you interview know
what type of direction you are going in.

Even if your first interview goes well, keep the
appointments that you have made and talk to the other
consultants. You may find someone that you like
better, or someone that has the same vision for your
company that you do.

After you have had all of the appointments, you can
make your choice.

Be the master of your mind rather than mastered by your mind.

- Zen Saying

As how we have introduced the book, man, if compared to superheroes like Superman and the X-men, is somehow similar to them in terms of possession of power. Yes, you’ve read that right. Man, like you and me, has a power. If these superheroes have supernatural powers that give them the ability to fly, to climb buildings and walls, to become invisible, to produce fire and ice, and to have special physical strength, we human beings, on the other hand, have the ability to mold our personality, to shape our future, and to create our own destiny. And all these are due to the power we possess – the power of the mind.

The power we humans possess can never be compared to any supernatural powers these superheroes use. After all, they are not real, ours is. Some agent in our body is responsible for giving us this power that makes us more hero than they do, an empowering agent, and this is our mind. It is our mind that gives us authority and superiority, confidence and self-esteem, and inspiration and guidance over ourselves and others. This is how the mind works. This is how the mind empowers.

What is empowerment, by the way? I used to believe that empowerment is simply giving power or authority to somebody that not anyone can possess until I’ve read this book entitled Empowerment Takes More than a Minute. It is about Marvin, a president and CEO of a midsize, once-successful company. I found the story to be really inspiring and motivating that I’d like to share it with you. It will give us a clearer insight on what empowerment really is and, like me, it might also change your view on it.

For some time now, Marvin had been thinking of his problems on the company he was working at, or for that matter, he was managing. What he failed to see was the company also has its problems on him – that he is turning out to be an ineffective leader. He had taken over leadership there for over a year already, or should I say, for over a year only, and yet his effectiveness as a leader is already not enough for the maintenance, if not progress, of the company. But, at least, in all fairness to him, he cared enough to reflect on the matters that might lead to the company’s failure. Again, only it was hard for him to accept the fact that change should start on him before the rest of the company changes.

This made him ponder for quite a while. And then he came up with a solution, one that would make them leaner and meaner, one that he ‘thought’ was helpful – empowerment. And since he believed that everyone needs to be empowered, he made them, not certain if it was at all for the best of the company. Well, for nine months, it seems that it was not even close to being good; especially that empowerment was merely a word to those supposed-to-be-empowered, and nothing more.

Desperate, he sought help from Sandy, the so-called “Empowering Manager.” At first he was hesitant because he found out that what he once thought as a “he” is really a “she.” It’s as if his self-esteem decreased since he was asking for a help from a lady. But eventually, he had accepted the truth that he really needed advice. The conversation went through and the most interesting part was how Sandy defined empowerment:

“Empowerment is not giving people power. They already have plenty of power – in the wealth of their knowledge and motivation – to do their jobs magnificently. We define empowerment as letting this power out.”

With such clear and motivating points of view, Sandy was able to change the attitude of Marvin towards managing his company and being able to compete once again. Well, actually, it was not only Marvin that was moved with Sandy’s discussion. There was also me.

Although the story was basically focused on managing and leadership, what we can relate to is what empowerment really is and how it works. But then again, mind power is really about managing ourselves until we can lead others, isn’t it? Therefore, restating what the Empowerment Manager said, all of us have already that power inside of us. What the mind does is empowering us by releasing that power and letting us use it in appropriate measures.

It was also discussed earlier in the book that the mind generates two kinds of thoughts: positive and negative thoughts. If our mind is full of positive ideas on dealing with everyday life, our way of thinking also becomes positive. Likewise, if we let negative ideas to rule our lives, then we may suffer from negative thinking. Both of these kinds of thinking have power over us. It’s now up to us which thinking we choose to empower us, since both may shape our future and create our destiny; only, bringing different results. Now, which do you prefer?

And, oh, before that, how do you see your glass of water, half-full or half-empty? Go on and find out what your answer means.

Power of Positive Thinking

(The Glass is Half-Full)

Although you can see that the glass is half-empty, you chose to see it in a positive way. It is still half-full, anyway. The absence of half of the volume of water didn’t even bother you. What mattered was that it still contains water. If this is how you answered the question above and how you justified your answer, then you have a positive way of thinking.

Positive thinking is a way of looking at the brighter side of life. Everything is good, beautiful, and light. There are no worries, problems, or fears. In short, all you see and believe in is, well, positive. I guess that’s already the most suitable word in describing this way of thinking, which is why it is the term being used.

This kind of thinking is very powerful in that if you think that you are going to pass an exam, you are going to pass; if you think that you’ll get noticed by your crush, you’ll get noticed; if you think you will get promoted at work, then you’ll get promoted. This is how powerful the mind is, particularly positive mind. Even the famous Clint Eastwood believes in this general truth that he quoted, “If you think it’s going to rain, it will.”

So, how does the power of positive thinking works? How can it create reality? Do we only have to think of positive things and then will it happen right away? That positive thinking really is powerful may be somehow hard to believe at first, that’s why we may ask certain questions like those above. Because the mind is working on the information you send it, positive thinking leads to positive reality. This is how it works. Yes, we do have to really think of positive things. But it doesn’t stop there. Remember the ever-famous cliché “Do your best and God will do the rest”? You know, it’s true. Aside from believing in and having faith in something we want to happen, we have to do something about it. You can’t ace an exam just by sitting on the couch and watching TV days before taking it, can you?

Let us take into account again the computer as a metaphor of the human mind. The mind is like a computer, this time due to the fact that we can program it with certain functions and tasks. Sometimes, it even acts as our autopilot. For instance, we use it when we drive and talk on a mobile phone at the same time. Therefore, we can program it with whatever we want to happen. Say, for example, you want to be attractive. Thus, you say to yourself “I can be beautiful, healthy and slim.” But for this positive thinking to work, you can’t just leave it at that. You still need to do something. You need the right self-programming: “I can be beautiful, healthy, and slim if… (a) I’ll take enough rest every night; (b) I’ll eat proper balance diet; (c) I’ll do exercises; (d) I’ll brush my teeth every after meal; etc.” And if all these thoughts sink into your system, you’ll see that they wouldn’t be far from happening. Mind power implies will power. With positive thinking, one does not stop with I can or I am. There will always be an I will after it in which it will cause the realization of his aspirations.

Positive thinking is a powerful tool that helps us build the life we want. It can make us beautiful and smart. It can get us the dream job with the excellent salary we always dreamed of. It can help us find our one true love. But we have to use them properly and we have to continue working with them regularly – to the point where it becomes such a habit that we ought to say them all the time. Isn’t it better maintaining such thoughts than keeping worthless ideas inside our head – the stuff we keep thinking about but doesn’t really help us accomplish anything and, in many cases, may actually push us backwards?

We should also understand that some affirmations take some time to take effect. It really depends on where we are and what we want to accomplish. For example, if you’re unemployed yet want to be a millionaire, well, in reality, it will take quite some time. You have to get a job first, and from there, start making the big money and earn the millions you want. Successes usually not happen overnight. So the first step is to focus on how we can accomplish our goal. If we are on the right place, plus we possess the right attitude, then it won’t be too far.

Power of Negative Thinking

(The Glass is Half-Empty)

Some of the water spilled. Someone drank on my glass of water. Or there isn’t enough water on the pitcher to fill the glass. Whichever reason, still my glass is half-empty! It may not be enough for me. It may not quench my thirst fully. And darn that person who drank some of my water!

Geez… Is this how you react to a glass of water which is half-filled, or in this case, half-emptied? If you are, your mind is full of negative thoughts. You even cursed a person who drank some of the water in your glass which you are not even sure of. You are filled with opinions that something bad has happened to the water. What’s worse is, they are not even proven to be true and yet you believe them.

Negative thinking, the exact opposite of positive one, is a way of looking at, not necessarily the bad, but definitely not the good things in life. Everything that has happened is due to some undesirable cause. Or if something is not yet happening, you think of something bad that might take place. Your mind is full of worries, fears, discomforts, and you keep asking questions with what if’s.

This kind of thinking is also powerful. It is generated by the mind isn’t it? And the mind is empowering, right? Therefore, negative thinking has its own power. Yes, the same power as positive thinking – power to mold our personality, power to shape our future, and power to create our destiny. The only difference is the outcome it will bring about. So, if positive thinking brings positive reality, does negative thinking bring about negative reality? Do you think so? Well, let’s see.

Negative thoughts, as how we have described in an earlier chapter, are due to mistakes, unpleasant incidents, embarrassing moments, and wrong decisions that have been experienced by the individual. Similar to plant seeds, these unlikable ideas were buried deep in his minds. As they grow and flourish, they remain hindrances in his ability to be someone and to do something. This is where his fears start to develop, slowly take over his strengths – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – and eventually, remove his self-confidence and trust in himself. Then, from here, it wouldn’t be far until he starts saying the words that would destroy his dreams, I can’t, and worse, acting the unwillingness it implies, I won’t.

Usually, we prefer to stay in a place where everything is safe and secure and where dangers are low and minimal. For instance, one may avoid joining competitions because he knows he can’t win. Or instead of courting a gorgeous girl, one settles to be with someone not so pretty because he knows he can’t win over the prettier girl. But this is also where we realize the vastness of our limitations. Because of this, we can conclude that we have already lost even before we begin, and we already failed even before we tried. What we don’t usually know is that the greatest failure in life is not losing, but not trying at all. After all, who knows? No one can really say what could happen in the competition or with that gorgeous girl until he tried, right?

This is the power of negative thinking. It makes one unattractive because he believes that he can’t be good-looking. It gives one an awful future because he believes that he can’t find a job and earn enough money. It lets one stay single and alone because he believes that he can’t win friends or find true love. And because he can’t, he won’t. Remember? Mind power implies will power. And since the mind power is negative, the will power is reluctant.

Funny how ignorance sometimes can be blessings in disguise because it becomes a way for someone to keep on trying. There are instances where people say, “I really don’t understand the question. So, I just guessed my answers,” or “I know I’m not good at speeches so I wrote what I have to say and will just read it in front.” Because of simple and little ways of attempts, we can say that these people are more superior and will likely to succeed farther than those who don’t try at all.

Ok, so by now you should have a market that is profitable and all you need to do is create
a product.

There are lot’s of different products that you can create but for the purposes of this report
we will create an Ebook and I will show you how to write a brilliant one even if you do not
have a clue about the topic!

The reason that you should create an Ebook as your first project is it is without a doubt in
my opinion the easiest product to get started with!

If your niche really takes off you can always come back and create an “add-on” product
like educational videos, or an online course as an upsell but to start off with focus on an
Ebook.

So let’s get started:

First thing we need for our eBook is Chapters how do you know what chapters to put in
your ebook?

Well you need to know what people want answers too within your niche so for this we
head over to Yahoo Answers.

http://answers.yahoo.com/

Yahoo Answers is an excellent resource to see what people are wanting answers to within
a market.

It is an awesome tool to find out what the chapters or sections of your eBook should be.

What you need to do know is search through the results and see what the main questions
or subjects that are bought up are.
For instance for my example one of the topics that comes up a lot within “Dog Potty
Training” is the question “Should I smack my dog when potty training?”
The answer to this question by almost everyone is a big resounding NO!
So taking the example I would think about entitling on my chapters “The 4 Reasons Why
You Shouldn’t Smack Your Dog While Potty Training!”.
The amount of chapters you pick for your ebook is Dependant on how many different
questions are being asked but you should aim for about 5 or 6 chapters with good content.
More on how to get the content next, for now find 5 or 6 questions that are being asked
and make a note of them as these will be the chapters of your ebook.
The top 5 issues I found for “Dog Potty Training” was:
? Should I Smack My Dog When Potty Training?
? Is It Right To Shout At My Dog When Potty Training?
? Should You Use A Crate When Dog Potty Training?
? What’s The Best Routines To Potty Train My Dog?
? What Is The Best Way To Potty Train An Older Dog?
There was actually a lot more for “Dog Potty Training” but for your first product just focus
on 5 or 6 main questions and save the questions in a notepad file and put them in the
folder you made earlier.
These will be the main subjects or chapters for your eBook and all you need to do know is
make a good title for each chapter and obviously add content to each chapter.
For the start of your book always start with an introduction where you can tell them who
you are and what you are going to tell them.
This does not have to be too long however a nice little story will go down well.:)
For the title of your Chapters I find that catchy titles following the top reasons routine works
well.
So for instance you could entitle the first chapter
“The Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Not Smack Your Dog While Potty Training And
The REAL Secrets You Must Know To Do Successful Potty Training!”

As with every other step do not get too caught up on the titles of the chapters as you start
to put content in your Ebook you can always go back and change them.
I find these three guidelines help:
? Try to think of a catchy title that grabs their attention
? Use words like “Secrets” or “Never Revealed Before” To Spark Interested
? Also use the top 10 reasons methods or 10 thins NOT to do when training
your dog, as it is easier when you go to write your book!
So to recap you should know have 5 or 6 questions that your product is going to answer
and have thought of how to put them into catch Chapter names.
As I say this does not have to be a masterpiece just think of 5 or 6 Chapter headers that
you are going to tell them to answer the questions, as it will give you a focus for your
content that you are going to do next.
Once you have your chapter titles you are ready to start writing your guide and the next
step will show you how with ease.

Ok, so you have your niche and have picked out the top 5 phrases that people are
searching for in that market.

The next thing we need to find out is if the niche will make you any money!
Bear in mind that there is no guarantees that you will make money with your product,
however if you follow this step it should make 99% sure that there is a market for the
taking!

What you should do now as well is make a folder on your Desktop to keep all your work
together.

Just call it your “niches name” product for example “Dog Training Product”.

To find out if you will make money from your product we need to ascertain that all the
people are searching for your 5 phrases are buying as well!

There are many different ways to do this but this is the way I do it:

First of all go to http://www.google.com and type in your top phrase (the one with the most
searches) for instance I would type in “Dog Training”.

Once you have typed in your main phrase the first thing you should look at is the number
of search results the query has.

You can see from the example above I have highlighted the search results and there are
38,800,000 results for the phrase “dog training”.

This is a lot of results and that normally means there is a market there.

The next thing you should do is look at the number of adwords the phrase has.

I have highlighted the Adwords on the page and these are adverts people place on Google
for certain phrases what we are interested in is how many competing ads there are and
what sort of price they are paying to be there.

Basically the more profitable a market the more people will bid to place their ads.

So all you need to do now is type each one of the five phrases you picked earlier and
make a note of:

1. The number of search results
2. How many people are paying to be their on Google Adwords
The next thing we need to do as mentioned above is get a rough idea of how much people
are willing to pay to be there on Google Adwords as this is a good indicator of how much
money is in a niche!

Also make a note of what the Adwords are selling as this is a good indicator of WHAT
people are buying in the niche and this can help you with your product creation.
For instance what is the top Adword Ad?

For the dog training niche it is:
Dog Training Problems
The Professional Solution
Remote Collars & Electrical Fences

Bear in mind this is not necessarily the best product to copy although it will give you an
idea of what people are selling in the niche.

However the above is just something to bear in mind, when you have checked out the
search results for each one of your phrases and the competing ads we need to know how
much people are paying and for this we will use a site called:

http://www.spyfu.com/

Spyfu is a site that lets you see what sort of money people are spending on Google
Adwords for their phrases.

All you need to do is type in your main phrase into the Spyfu search bar and it will display
the information we want.
You will need to do this with each of your phrases but I will go through the process with my
example phrase “Dog Training”.

Let me explain what this data means and how it is relevant:
Cost/Click: This tells us the average cost to the advertiser per click, so you can see that
the average advertiser is spending $0.80 per each click. The higher amount is the better
as if they are spending a lot of money per click they must be getting sales! (normally
anyway!)

Click/Day: This shows us the average amount of clicks per day an advertiser is getting
on that phrase. If this is high it is better also as it means people are searching for
information on that phrase.

Advertisers: This shows the number of advertisers bidding on this phrase. Ideally this
number should be lower than 20 as it means that there is more than 20 different competing
Google Adwords and if you can find a good niche with low competition then this is better.
Don’t worry too much about this though as if it is high you can get people to promote your
product!

Cost/Day: This shows the total daily cost to all advertisers that bought this
keyword/phrase this just shows you how much an advertiser is prepared to pay to stay at
the top. Normally the more the better, as if the advertiser is willing to pay more than they
must think the keyword is profitable!

So all you need to do is go through each of your 5 keywords and see the results using this
tool.

Ideally you will be looking for all the figures to be high and the competition low (lower than
10 competing ads can be a goldmine!).

However as long as people are spending money and there is a market there you will make
money 99% of the time!

Also you should now start thinking about narrowing down your niche for product creation
using this tool.

For example I have been focusing on the keyword “Dog Training” however it is a good idea
to focus on an actual topic within a subject like “Dog Potty Training” in my example.
This is not always the case but does mean you can focus in on one point and will be easier
when creating your product and more targeted.

This is one of the most talked about subjects in IM and can be like the search for the Holy
Grail!

The good news is it really does not have to be that difficult and you can find hungry niches
with ease it just requires you to think a bit outside the box.
This step is the exact method I use to find hungry niches and is quite easy to do!
The first thing you need to do especially with your first product is find a niche that interests
you.

This is not always the case and there will be plenty of profitable niches that you do not
really interest you at all, but with your first product it is a good idea to find a niche that you
have some sort of interest in.

If you are having difficulty thinking of a good niche that you have interest in, the best thing
to do is think about your hobbies.

The first niche I can think of for you is “How to make money online” as you are reading this
guide.

Just think of things that you enjoy doing like cooking, playing computer games, fishing,
DIY, Ebay, collecting stamps etc…

The other thing I should mention here is try not to spend too much time thinking about this
as it can prevent you from taking action!
Once you have thought of a niche that you have some interest in settle on that niche and
get started.

Obviously I will not know what niche you have picked so for the purposes of this report I
will go through the niche research steps with the “Dog Training” niche!
Ok, so once you have got your niche the first thing you need to do is see if it is profitable
and people are looking for it!

Remember don’t spend too much time on this just think of something you have an interest
in and move on to the next step if you need any help send me an email to
admin@entrepreneurial.org.uk and I will help you!

The next thing you need to do is go to Overture, freekeywords.wordtracker.com and spyfu.com and https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and check out how many people are searching for your niche.
The site I use is Pixelfast.com as it lets you see the amount of Google results and the
amount people are paying for bids on Overture.

Welcome to Step 1 the reason I thought I would include this step which really has nothing
to do with product creation, is because you will need the right mindset to get the most out
of this report.

The hardest thing I found and probably many other people do when getting started with
any aspect of Internet Marketing is the hard work it involves.
I am not sure how you got interested in Internet Marketing but if you were like me you have
probably been pulled in at some point, by all the websites out there that promise untold
riches for 5 minutes work!
Don’t get me wrong this is indeed possible, but in my experience not when you are getting
started. It is indeed a reality if you have a list of 3,000 responsive buyers that you can send
out an email that will make you thousands of dollars within a few days.
Although to start off you need to create that product and build that list and unfortunately
that will require some good old fashioned elbow grease!
So you will need the correct mindset and I am not going to write pages and pages of
motivation for you, except to answer the number one question that stops people taking
action or makes them give up in my experience.
I know this question comes up and can be very hard to overcome because I have asked
myself the same question plenty of times when I was getting started with Internet
Marketing.
Here is the question or questions I found myself asking when I was getting started:
“Is this going to work?”
“Is all this work worth it?”
“Will my product sell?”
These are the three main questions that I found myself asking when I was creating my
own product.
Well take it from me the answer to all those questions is “Yes it really does work!”.
If you follow the steps within this guide you will see that Internet Marketing does not have some SECRET formula to riches!
All you have to do is see things through to the end, have the ability to follow a series of
steps and probably most important take action!
This report will do you no good whatsoever if it is just gathering dust on your hard drive,
and please I implore you not to wait for the next best thing that promises riches!
Take action today and you will see results and I am here to help if you need it.
Whether it takes you 2 days or 2 weeks to follow these steps see them through to the end
and I Guarantee you will make money online!
All you have to do is take a leap of faith with these steps once, to create your own product
and once that is pulling in money you can do the same thing over and over to build a
virtual empire.
YOU CAN DO IT AND YOU WILL SUCCEED!

So let’s get started!
As I say if you need any help please contact me I am happy to help!
